Stewed Apples Good For Gut Health?
It’s no secret that regular, raw apples are good for you. They are full of nutrients such as vitamin C and potassium. But there is new evidence out on stewed (cooked) apples. And that’s good news because cooking apples are everywhere particularly this time of year. Are stewed apples good for gut health?
How Are Cooked Apples Different?
During the stewing process the gut healing fibre ‘pectin’ is released. And evidence suggests that pectin can help repair and maintain the health of our intestinal lining. It has also been shown to reduce inflammation, reduce toxin levels in the gut and regulate gut bacteria. All things we want for our guts to be as healthy as possible. The insoluble fibre the apples contains also support good digestion.
How To Eat Them?
Ideally leave the skin on. You will miss out on a good chunk of the vitamins, minerals and fibre if you remove it. And even with cooking apples once you have stewed them down the skin is soft and you won’t even notice it’s there.
Big issue is that most people just use them to make an apple crumble! With the processed sugar, flour and butter you completely defeat the point of trying to make a healthy treat.
Just stew them down with a couple of handfuls or raisins, a good teaspoon of cinnamon and just a small drizzle of honey to sweeten it that extra bit. Just try it and I bet you won’t think you need to add any extra sugar or anything to the dish, it’s delicious just like that. I would serve it will a dollop of Greek yogurt. Which is another incredibly gut friendly food!
Conclusion – Stewed Apples Good For Gut Health?
Yes they are really good for gut health. As well as containing a lot of other incredibly healthy vitamins and minerals as well. Just make sure you don’t spoil the ‘healthiness’ but adding a load of unhealthy ingredients to it.
