The Most Calorie Laden Christmas Treats

I would never say to anyone not to have any treats over Christmas. The reality is you should be able to allow yourself to indulge a bit on occasion and still stick to an overall healthy regime. And yes still continue to lose weight if that is what you are trying to do. As ever, knowledge is power so if you know what calories are in what foods you should be able to make better, more informed choices about what to treat yourself to and what to avoid. These are some of the most calorie laden Christmas Treats.

1/ Cheese Straws

This is possibly the most shockingly high in calories treat of all. 185 calories per straw! And gone in 2/3 bites and a few seconds. And won’t fill you up at all either. Are they really that nice and worth it?

2/ Salted Nuts

A 30 gram serving, which is roughly a handful, is 184 calories. I have no issue with nuts as a snack, but (a) they are often heavily salted which is likely to make you want to drink more. And (b) when you are consuming quite a lot of calories elsewhere they probably aren’t the best choice.

3/ Crisps

Just a handful is 100 calories. And highly processed and full of oil. And will be very salty again as well.

4/ Cheese and Biscuits

Just 2 jacobs crackers and a 30 gram chunk of cheese is 208 calories. And that’s usually after the actual meal! Are you really still hungry?

5/ Quality Street

They obviously vary but average out as about 44 calories. So a few of those and you are well over 100.

6/ Mince Pie

A whopping 277 calories for a mince pie. Are they really that nice and worth it?

7/ Alcohol

This is where a real chunk of the calories comes for some people. A 175ml glass of wine/sparkling is around 150 calories. And a pint of beer is 225/250 calories.

You can see how easy it would be to rack up 1000 calories or more just on drinks and nibbles. Add that to your main meal and your calories for the day are going to be sky high. And for most people it isn’t just Christmas Day itself where these foods/drinks are around it’s throughout the whole of December. So my advice would be decide what you actually like and want to treat yourself on. Don’t just eat all these things because they are there and ‘it’s Christmas.’ If you do that you will undoubtedly put weight on and regret it come January.
