Christmas Drinks Calories Guide

It’s amazing how many calories you can get through purely through drinks at this time of year. Check out this previous blog for Christmas Food Calories. And I’m not just talking about alcoholic drinks. It’s so quick and easy to drink 100’s (or even 1000’s!) of calories without really realising it. Of course you want to have a few treats over Christmas, but if just blindly eat and drink whatever you want you could end up with an awful lot of work to do to get the weight back off come January. Knowledge is Power! So have a look at what calories/sugar are in the following drinks and see what you think is worth the calories and what isn’t.

Coffee Shop Drinks

Starbucks’ Signature Caramel Hot Chocolate (picture below) – One large mug – 758 calories and 93.7 grams of sugar. 3 times daily sugar allowance. That is truly shocking! No way is that worth the sugar and calories.

Here are a few other offenders. But the reality is that whenever you buy a milky, creamy, sweet coffee it’s going to be pretty bad news. At Christmas it seems to go up an extra notch though. Presumably because people are more willing to consume junk this time of year.

Caffe Nero’s large Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate – 503 calories and 60 grams of sugar.

Pret a Manger mint hot chocolate – 452 cals and 50.2g sugar.

Starbucks eggnog latte – 272 cals and 33.8 grams sugar.

Personally I just don’t think the amount of calories and probably more importantly sugar in these hot drinks is even remotely worth it. I have never tried one but they must be sweet beyond belief!

Alcoholic Drinks

Whilst the drinks above are higher calorie and sugar than any of the alcoholic drinks below, most people won’t consume many of them. Whilst most people will consume a fair few of the drinks below before, during and after Christmas. Again, it’s just a case of knowing what calories are in what and making choices on what and how much you drink accordingly.

Pint of beer – 180-230 calories depending on alcohol strength.

120ml mulled wine – 227 cals (lots of sugar in it).

120ml eggnog – 110 cals.

50ml serving balieys – 164 cals – 10 grams sugar.

125ml champagne – 92 cal.s

125ml wine – 85-100 cals depending on strength.

25ml gin – 55 cals.

Conclusion – Christmas Drinks Calories Guide

Too many times I have seen people work really hard to lose weight and put a serious chunk of it back on at Christmas. And they ALWAYS regret doing it come January. So of course enjoy some treats, but don’t go crazy. It’s a lot easier to put weight on than it is to lose it!
